Description

Subject Matter:

Commodore Foote balances his weight on one leg as he looks out toward the left-hand edge of the picture plane. He poses with his bicorne hat and sword which, along with the gold embroidered stripes on his sleeve and prominent epaulets, signal his high rank within the United States Navy. Here he poses for the photographer Mathew Brady, whose studio produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of noteworthy United States army and navy officers during the American Civil War (1861-1865).

Physical Description:

Full-length, standing portrait of a man in a military uniform.
