Composition with Boats and Anchor
Stuart Davis
Description
Subject Matter:
This print was issued by the American Artists School as part of their First Annual Print Series. At the time of the production of this print, Stuart Davis was employed (as a muralist) by the Public Works Art Project. Beginning in 1929, Davis spent many summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts (Massachusetts' North Shore), so the subject of this print may have been inspired by Davis' time there. Davis was a Cubist but one who used vibrant colors and shapes to show the dynamism of the American culture. He was also well known for his jazz-influenced paintings of the 1940s and 1950s which were bold, brash, and colorful. This black and white print shows the same energy.
Physical Description:
This print is a black and white abstract depiction of components of a boat and an anchor in a variety of shades of black, grey and white, and many textures, in an angular composition.
