Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph of the Greek Orthodox monastery Mar Saba divides the architectural complex and its landscape setting into two diagonal halves of the picture plane. The Kidron Valley, where the convent is located, occupies the upper right quadrant of the image, while the multi-tiered building occupies the lower left triangle of the picture. The monastery's stepped buildings zigzag in a diagonal from the lower right to upper left corner of the photograph, drawing a stark contrast with the smooth tops of the hills in the background.

Physical Description:

Elevated view of a domed brick building with many levels positioned on the edge of a steep ravine.
