Description

Often carved in high relief, "ranma" are functional and decorative panels above the sliding doors that separate Japanese rooms. The designs, incorporating open spaces, allow ventilation. In this piece the attention to detail in the carving of the lotus blossoms and the clever rendering of the egrets' movements imbue the watery envionment with a sense of life.
