Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a row of arches in the crypt of a church in Worcester, seen from a slightly oblique angle that focuses on the place where the arch opens onto the ceiling. By focusing closely on the arches—and excluding all context—it is impossible to interpret the size or scale of the structures. If not for the title of the photograph, the columns might seem to be a series of identical, abstract sculptures or even a pencil drawing. The pale hue of the stone is transformed into a delicate shade of gray in this gelatin silver print, a meditation on the process of translating three-dimensional architecture into two-dimensional photograph.
