Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a young woman indoors leaning forward in her chair and toward the left side of the frame. The composition is heavier on the left side, due to the vase of flowers behind the young woman's right shoulder. On the right side of the image, the chair and white-washed area created by naturally lit window balance the composition. The sitter turns her face toward the camera, while her body faces to the left. The light from the window creates a soft chiaroscuro on her face. She rests her chin lightly on her hand. The woman's expression is calm and serious, with a slight hint of a smile. She is wearing a dark hat, dress, and a light shawl draped on her shoulders.
