Death Appearing on Horseback
Héctor Xavier
Description
Subject Matter:
Animals and people were popular subjects for Xavier, who was part of the Generación de la Ruptura that produced art work outside of the popular canon of Mexican Muralism that dominated the 20th century art scene in Mexico. This piece was made during or shortly after his travels throughout Europe. He was hoping to expand his skill and explore other styles of art. Today, few of Xavier's pieces are in museums or public institutions since he did not believe in donating his work.
Physical Description:
This print shows a skeleton riding on the back of a white horse with three figures in robes standing in the background, one of which appears to be fleeing in the opposite direction. A naked child reaches up for one of the figures.
