Description

Lakshmi, the goddess of abundance, is sometimes regarded as one of the consorts of the great Hindu god Vishnu. This beauty stands with a gentle sway to her body, carrying a wide shallow bowl designed to hold clarified butter or oil. Once a wick is placed in the oil, a simple lamp or dipa is made. The parrot on her shoulder adds to her charm.
Exhibited in "Divine Encounters, Earthly Pleasures: Twenty Centuries of Indian Art," 12/12/03-2/22/04.
