Description

Subject Matter:

This poster was originally exhibited at New York’s World Trade Center as part of Earth Day in New York in 1995. Paul Rand was commissioned, along with 9 other designers to create posters for the exhibition. Rand refrains from using images of the Earth or other explicitly environmental images. The symbolism of the design is simple: Rand creates a grid of hearts all in green, except for one in red. Rand relates love to environmentalism by repeating the motif of a green heart. The inclusion of a single red heart reminds the viewer of the humanism involved in environmentalism. Humans, and their capacity to love, are essential in the fight against environmental issues.
