Subject Matter:
William Lee Hankey was a British artist who studied at the Chester School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Hankey often depicted lanscapes and people- particularly commoners and peasants such as these. He spent a significant amount time in France, and was influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage. Hankey was associated with the Newlyn School in Britain.
Physical Description:
This is a print of two people, a man and a woman. The woman wears a long dress, clogs, and a scarf covering most of her hair, and carries a large basket in her arms. The man walks behind her wearing a brimmed hat and carrying a sack/bundle of hay over his shoulder. The people are threadbare and the very low horizon is bare except for a colonaded bridge, slightly visible, in the distance on the left.
