Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts the recently revealed excavations at Medinet Habu in Thebes, the mortuary temple of Ramesses III. Beato's framing of the site centers on several rows of partially destroyed columns, which are flanked along the left and back with rows of walls in varying heights and states of degradation. The position of the camera on the edge of what appears to be an interior courtyard offers a view through an interior doorway where more destroyed columns are visible. The photograph offers some sense of the work of archaeological excavation, by showing the site as found rather than rebuilt.
