Subject Matter:

This theatrical portrait of F. Holland Day, a good friend of Frederick Evans, depicts Day in Algerian costume. This was one of many images taken of Day in such costumes, which he brought back with him after a trip to Algiers. Day sits with his legs crossed, hunched over, and looking down at his clasped hands. This photograph employs the soft focus and lighting typical of Evans portrait photography.
