Description

Subject Matter:

Created just after the end of his so-called "Blue Period," this drawing was made after Picasso settled in Paris' artist quarter Bateau-Lavoir. During this period, the Spanish artist began his so-called "Rose Period," when he depicted performers, harlequins and clowns. This scene shows an unidentified seated woman holding a hand mirror up to apply her lipstick, a favorite motif that Picasso would return to often throughout his long career.

Physical Description:

At the center of the page, there is a pen and ink drawing of a seated woman holding a small mirror. Her hair is colored a rich brown in watercolor and her stockings are orange and shoes green.
