Firelight
James Abbott McNeill Whistler

Description
Subject Matter:
The portraits of Elizabeth Robins Pennell and her husband Joseph were drawn--one each time--during afternoon visits to the Pennell's house. The one of Elizabeth was in particular considered a success. Whistler's fascination with fire-lit subjects such as forges, furnaces, etc. is here extended to portraiture.
Physical Description:
A woman seated in an armchair, facing towards the left, looks at the viewer. The background is dark but otherwise undescribed.
