Description

Subject Matter:

Whistler drew this portrait of his friend and biographer, the American artist Joseph Pennell, to serve as a frontispiece for the upcoming book on lithography that Pennell and his wife Elizabeth Robins Pennell were writing.

Physical Description:

A bearded man, seen at some distance, is seated with legs crossed in an armchair with his hands behind his head.
