In nineteenth-century China, it was common to
create gift fans made by multiple artists. The left
side of this fan features plum blossoms painted
by Qian Juying, a woman artist and native of
Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, who descended from
a distinguished lineage of scholar-painters. An
unidentified artist contributed the pink and purple
flowers in the center, while Wu Yun 吳雲 (1811–1883),
a notable scholar, collector, and calligrapher, penned
the two colophons. Colophons often include poetry
or commentary on the painting.
