Description

Subject Matter:

The title of this photograph adds a particularly ominous resonance to bleak subject matter: the forced march of soldiers to battle during World War I. Kertész's composition situates the procession on a winding country road in Poland that bisects the picture plane and disappears out of view, reinforcing the enormity of the conflict through the endless, anonymous participants, and underscoring the monotony of the soldiers' compulsory journey. This image was included in a portfolio of 15 photographs entitled "A Hungarian Memory," which was published by Hyperion Press in 1980.
