Subject Matter:
Jean Lurçat was a French artist influenced by both the cubism of Picasso and Braque, and surrealism. Many of Lurçat's works have a somber and desolate quality to them. Though Lurçat was most well known for his tapestries, in the 1920s and 30s, after travelling extensively through the Middle East, the artist produced several different series of figure paintings. One of these was a large scale painting of bathers from 1931. This sketch is from the same period and of the same theme.
Physical Description:
This drawing shows four male bathers. The largest figure stands in the center with his hands on his hips and back to the viewer. He faces three figures who are standing a little farther and lower on the beach. The figures are lean and muscular with elongated limbs.
