Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a graffitied wall in the Brazilian capital of Rio de Janeiro. Spray painted in bold black lines on a white wall facing the camera, a running figure sprints across the wall, a black and white checkered ball at its feet.  Written to the figure’s right in stylized, jagged letters are the words, “Brasil 2002.”  Soccer is an important sport and cultural activity for the nation of Brazil, and the year written in graffiti refers to the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in South Korea and Japan.  Beyond the wall are telephone poles and electrical wires, and the façades of buildings.
