Giocoliere e Due Cavalli, Blu, Giallo, e Nero
Marino Marini
Description
Subject Matter:
Created after Marini returned to Milan after WWII, this print depicts two of his major subject matter: horses and performers. Marini developed these themes during the time he spent in his wife's native Switzerland during the war. The two themes both represent a return to art historical motifs and a look forward. Though he was primarily known as a sculptor, Marini worked extensively in two-dimensions. These two-dimensional works were not merely sculptural studies or secondary works but an active part of his practice in investigating different ways to present modernist form.
Physical Description:
At the center of the page, there are two horses and a figure standing in a row. The horse on the far left looks to the left and is outlined in white and its body is black. This black color extends outside of the horse's body and creates a border around the other two figures. At the center, a second horse looks straight out and is colored in yellow. On the far right, there is a figure, colored in blue. The figure's hands are up in the air above their head. The print is signed (l.r.) "MARINO".
