Description

Subject Matter:

Typically, Thiebaud depicts everyday consumer goods such as food (many colorful desserts) and toys, often relying on his imagination and memory of the objects while painting. Describing himself as "a traditional painter of illusionistic forms," he has however often been associated with the Pop art movement because of his choices of subject matter. This print is one of a series of works to depict eye glasses. With the use of repetition, Thiebaud was able to highlight the variations within the group. At the same time, despite the inclusion of shadow lines, the strong linear quality of the print flattens the images of the glasses into a two-dimensional plane.

Physical Description:

At the top center of this print are five rows of different styles of black eyeglasses. The print is numbered (l.l.) "14.50" and signed and dated (l.r.) "Thiebaud 1971" in pencil.
