Description

Subject Matter:

Lombard summered in Monhegan, Maine and developed much of his aesthetic and subject matter there. Monhegan was a well known artist colony that had existed since the mid-nineteenth century. This work, made during Lombard's time on the island, is very stylized and seems to be inspired by Japanese woodcuts. The dramatic, thick dark lines outlining the rocks and boats add drama and intensity.
