According to a handwritten description on the lower margin of the print, this photograph depicts the graves of Sir Henry Lawrence and Brigadier-General J.S. Neill, both of whom were killed during the Revolt of 1857 in Lucknow, India and buried in the cemetery there. Lucknow became something of a tourist destination for English travelers in the 1860s and 70s as a result of the city's macabre history, and Saché took advantage of the business, setting up a photography studio in the city as early as 1871. This view, however, is less picturesque than experiential: the slightly oblique angle and viewpoint of the image, positioned just above the railing surrounding one of the graves, offers the viewer the perspective of peeking over the barrier to read the inscription on the stone marker below.
