Head of Maitreya
Chinese
Description
The round face of this "bodhisattva" is typical of the T'ang style. In comparison with the Gandharan head which portrays a more secular individual, this head's facial features have been idealized. After five or six centuries in China, Buddhist sculpture refelcted a less naturalistic, more abstract and remote approach to the depiction of the human form.
