Description

Subject Matter:

The larger figure is a 'Heavenly official' wearing elaborate Qing-style court robes. His robe features a white crane in the center, which symbolizes peace and longevity, and also depicts his rank. The smaller figure is holding a stack of books, and the speech bubble above the books translates to "highest official rank." The clouds in the background represent the celestial realm, since clouds were created between heaven and earth.

Physical Description:

Right panel of a diptych on a cardboard backing. A bearded figure is dressed in an elaborate robe featuring a crane motif and is holding a vase with long flowers. He stands against a green-blue background, which is covered in a lattice of white clouds. A smaller, childlike figure stands next to him and is holding a stack of books with a speech bubble above it with two Chinese characters on it. They are facing left.
