Hungarian Landscape, Puszta
André Kertész
Description
Subject Matter:
Photographed in the Hungarian village of Szigetbecse, this image depicts a draw well in the Great Hungarian Plain known as the Puszta. Kertész spent time in the region as a young man when he was working at the Budapest Stock and Commodities Exchange, and the open landscape of the Puszta likely provided a much needed antidote to office life. Kertész's photograph depicts the well in the center of a broad grassy plain, dotted with trees on either side, and dramatically positions the pump against the sky, which fills the upper half of the image. This image was included in a portfolio of 15 photographs entitled "A Hungarian Memory," which was published by Hyperion Press in 1980.
