Description

Subject Matter:

Clarence White's illustration for the novel Eben Holden is one of a series of twelve, but the only example of the series published in Issue no. 9 of Camera Work. This photograph focuses on two women interacting in a door frame. The woman to the right appears to be coming or going, as a carpet bag is placed on the floor next to her hoop skirt. The second subject, an older woman, bends at her waist to get a better look at the fabric of the young woman's dress. In the original panel from the novel, there is an inscription below the photograph that states, "How much was that a yard?" When the image was reproduced for Camera Work, this text inscription was absent.

Physical Description:

This image depicts two women engaged in action at the threshold of a doorway. One woman stands to the right side of the frame, while the woman on the left bends to examine her dress.
