Description

Subject Matter:

Here Plisson has depicted an idyllic scene of the seaside city of Imperia, located just across the border from France in Italy. Plisson studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and then went on to be included in a number of important shows, including the Salon des Indépendants (1932 & 1943) and the Salon d'Automne (1932 & 1941). He was a great traveler, as can be seen in this scene. The soft colors reflect the seaside location, while the flat planes of color show engagement with modernist abstraction and are typical of his prints and painting of the period.

Physical Description:

This color lithograph shows a street scene with pink, white and blue buildings, with the windows colored in yellow-green. It depicts a kind of plaza surrounded by buildings. There are a number of figures dispersed throughout the print. For example, at the center, there is a staricase where there are two figures dressed in black robes at the base, on the right. Another figure at the center in pink points towards the right. The print is signed (l.r.) "H. Plisson" and numbered (l.l.) "167/200" in pencil.
