In an Art Gallery
Benjamin Kopman
Description
Subject Matter:
This print shows a gentleman peering at an abstract painting, perhaps in the manner of images satirizing art critics such as by Daumier. Benjamin Kopman was a printmaker and a painter. Much of his art is characterized by thick black outlines as seen here. Kopman emigrated to the United States from Russia in 1903. He studied at the National Academy of Design, and in the 1930s and 1940s Kopman worked as an artist for the Works Progress Administration.
Physical Description:
A man wearing light colored pants and a dark jacket with tails stands on a rug in a narrow room facing framed art on a wall. There is a tall vase of flowers on a stand next to the hanging art. The man's hands are behind him, clasping a cane. Behind him is a stand with a hat on it. To his right, there is a wall with two other framed works of art, and one appears to be a portrait.
