Description

Subject Matter:

Herbert Bayer began working with photomontage as early as 1929. To create these works, he cut up photographs, reassembled them, and pasted them on top of each other. He then photographed the preliminary artwork to create the final product. This image was created much later than the majority of his photomontages, which were made in Berlin from 1928-1936.

Physical Description:

Photomontage of a forest of birch trees with eyes collaged onto the trees; many of them nearly indistinguishable from the bark. Near the right side of the image, another set of eyes with square cut-out edges is visible, seemingly peering through the trees.
