In the Beginning
Corita
Description
Subject Matter:
The title and subject of this print may refer to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The two outlined figures seem to be moving towards and perhaps gesturing at the sun, fish and tree. Sister Mary Corita belonged to the Order of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She completed her Master's in Art History from the University of Southern California in 1951. Her early work was very much focused on religious text and icons such as this, but in the 1960s she began to incorporate popular culture and move toward a poster style of print incorporating text. Sister Mary Corita was a social justice activist, and she used her art to address social and political issues.
Physical Description:
This print shows two rock-like forms, one below the other. On the bottom right of the top form there is an outline of two people with their arms around each other facing a yellow sun, a fish and some plants, and perhaps a tree.
