Okuhara Seiko
Description
Subject Matter:
Okuhara Seiko was a female artist in the Literati style of art. She was popular during her lifetime and after the Meiji restoration as well for her expressive Chinese-style naturalistic paintings.
Physical Description:
This is a hanging scroll depicting various cliffs and outcroppings out of a body of water, a distant mountain range, a mall roofed building, and inscriptions in the upper left corner. The painting is in black ink on paper and follows a general Z-shape. The bottom two-thirds are comprised of rough rock outcroppings and decorated with trees. As we move to the upper third is the mountain range in the distance. Above it is a negative space for the sky and a two-lined inscription on the left corner. Under the inscription of the second line is a red seal.
