Subject Matter:
This is a kanga, a machine-printed cloth that many Muslim women in East Africa wear; this type of cloth expresses the wearer’s Swahili identity and conveys opinions that cannot always be spoken. This example was designed to commemorate International Women’s Day and is printed with the Swahili phrase: “The liberation of women will be brought about by themselves” (ukombozi wa wanawake utaletwa na wenyewe).
Physical Description:
A blue, black, and white printed cloth with a radiating circular motif in the center of a large rectangle. The rectangle is blue with black curls and has a wide horizontal band of white. It is bordered by a thin line of blue flowers and a wider area decorated by repetitions of the central design and a pattern of vines.
