Description

Subject Matter:

In this photograph, several ships and smaller boats gather alongside the wharves of the city of Jaffa. Situated on a hill, the buildings which constitute the city appear to pile on top of one another, climbing toward a zenith in the top-center of the composition. Seawater fills the foreground of the image, which suggests that this photograph was taken at some distance from the port. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.

Physical Description:

View of a wharf from across a channel. Ships and small boats populate the middle ground, while a city rises behind. The foreground is mainly seawater.
