Description

Subject Matter:

This is a stoneware "iron-rust" glazed jar of the Jin dynasty (1125-1234). These wares are characterized by the use of a dark glaze on creamy stoneware bodies with iron oxide decoration in  dots, stripes or floral patterns.  They were made for everyday practical use by a variety of Northern kilns in Henan, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Shandong.

Physical Description:

This is a globular jar on a footring with short neck and direct rim. Three quarters of the body is covered in a black glaze with rows of russet spots. It has a domed teakwood lid with cloud-shaped peircings, round finial and wide flange.
