Description
Subject Matter:
This is a stoneware celadon jar of the Six Dynasties (220-589). High-fired glazed ceramics, especially celadons, developed rapidly during this time period and included a large variety of household, everyday wares. Jars such as this were made primarily for grain storage, and were placed in tombs to provide for the afterlife as well.
Physical Description:
This large storage jar with wide globular shoulders tapers to a narrow base and narrow neck with rim articulation. Four strap lug handles connect the rim to the shoulder. The upper two thirds is covered in a celadon glaze.
