Subject Matter:
This photograph depicts the northeastern corner of the Dome of the Rock, here erroneously referred to as the Mosque of Omar. The photograph reiterates the semicircular form of the dome, which comes to a slight point, in the numerous surrounding domed structures as well as various arched openings. The camera stands at a distance from the main subject in order to bring all of the Dome of the Rock and some of its important attendant structures into view. Much of the composition is, in fact, dominated by sky up above and pavement down below. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.
