Subject Matter:
This is the first state, of six, of this lithograph's design, printed in the arts and culture periodical "L'Artiste" and showing a mother tiger and her cub at play. Not coincidentally, Delacroix showed an almost identical composition in paint at the Salon of 1831, now at the Louvre. The Romantic painter often depicted scenes of wildlife and he frequented the Paris zoo to study the aminals. After studying the anatomy of the cats in detail, he depicted them with a romantic combination of ferocity and sweetness.
Physical Description:
In this black and white print, there are two tigers in the center of the image: the larger one lays with its head to the left and the other lies on the first tiger's back in the opposite direction. The background is a closed-in scene, dark on the left side and lighter on the right. The print is titled (l.c.) "Jeune Tigre jouant avec sa mère", signed (l.l.) "Eug. Delacroix.", printer signed (l.r.) "Lith. Betauts.r.S.mare" and the series labeled (u.c.) "L'ARTISTE" in the plate.
