Subject Matter:
Literary lady with elegant taste has been a popular theme in Chinese art since the 11th century. In the Qing dynasty starting from the Kangxi's reign, depictions literary laides on porcelain wares significantly increased. On this soup bowl, the central fan shaped section depicts two ladies drinking tea and conversing with each other in an elegant garden. Surrounding the fan are objects that are supposed to be the talents of these educated women, including painting, embroidering, and calligraphy.
