Katsura Kyoto (A)
Saitō Kiyoshi
Description
Subject Matter:
This print depicts the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto. The location is known for the elegant and traditional Japanese architecture as well as the gardens. This print appears to be an unassuming nook in the villa. This print as well as the villa itself operate on an artistic concept of negative space. Blank areas can be found in the villa grounds, in a location such as the one depicted here, as well as in this print on the area obscured by the shadow.
Physical Description:
This print depicts a buidling using geometric shapes. The scene shows the building at the top edge of the print with the yard and a single straight stone path up to the entrance. On the left is a tree and the right is largely obscured by a shadow. On the right is a red seal and a signature.
