Description

Subject Matter:

The Mount of Olives rises gradually in the distance, atop which can be seen the domed church and tower of the Ascension on the right-hand side, both elements of a Russian Orthodox convent. Patches of foliage and stone boulders populate the foreground, while a narrow dirt road stretches like a thin, white ribbon up to the village of Kefr-et-Tour (present-day At-Tur) to the east of Jerusalem. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.

Physical Description:

A field lies in the foreground, dotted by stone boulders and low-lying shrubbery. The hills in the background are lined with a number of buildings, including a prominent tower on the right-hand side of the photograph.
