Description

Subject Matter:

In this photograph, the ruins of Khan Djoub-Youssouf nestle into the side of a shallow hill near the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The sea is almost imperceptible as such, as it appears to be merely a strip of blank space; directly above, an irregular sliver in a slightly darker tone indicates the hills on the opposite shore. Boulders and tall grass fill the immediate foreground. The faint silhouette of a herd of cattle suggests a nearby human settlement. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.
