Subject Matter:
Luigi Kasimir studied at the Vienna Academy of Art under Wilhelm Unger. Unger taught Kasimir how to create hand-colored etchings, however Kasimir was one of the first artists to create color etchings using separate plates for each color. Here we see his characteristic palette of greys, browns, blues and greens. Kasimir was known for landscape views of popular destinations such as Kronborg Castle, seen in the distance. Kronborg is a Renaissance castle in Helsingor, Denmark; it is situated near the sound between Denmark and Sweden, between the North and Baltic Seas. Helsingor is immortalized as Elsinor in Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Physical Description:
This print depicts a desolate grey and brown seashore with waves hitting the shore from the left side of the sheet. Grey sky with grey and white clouds take up half of the sky. A black and grey castle with towers and spires is in the top right half.
