Description

Subject Matter:

In La Casita Azul, the artist includes few details in this flat image of the façade and instead focuses on the play of light and shadows. Sanchez was particularly interested in the interaction of light, color, and architecture. He would abstract his structures by eliminating irrelevant elements and making them come alive through color and realistic shadows. Sanchez was born in Cuba in 1921 and moved to New York City in 1944. His interest in architecture and light was cemented during his time in Cuba and the Carribbean influence can be seen throughout his career.

Physical Description:

This color lithograph depicts the front facade of a blue house, with a tower-like element in the center sporting a white pyramid hip roof. At the right, there is a gate with the large canopy of green visible just beyond.
