Description

Subject Matter:

Jacques Villon worked closely with cubist artists, including Picasso and Georges Braque, early in his career. Later, he was highly regarded as a printer where we still see some Cubist influences. He consistently employs structured forms and uses cross-hatching techniques to incorporate ranges of light and dark. This work was included in a porfolio published by Le Gerbier in Paris, titled Alternance, a collaborative literary and artistic compilation including works by other prominent writers and artists of the time including Jean Cocteau, Paul Eluard, and Henri Matisse.

Physical Description:

This black and white etching includes a sort of pyramid form, central to the image, with other smaller triangular forms towards the top. Along the bottom are several swirling forms. Faint cloud shapes appear throughout the background. The entire image is done with distinct cross-hatched etching lines.
