Description

Subject Matter:

This image is representative of Yūki Masaaki's work associated with nihonga style painting that combined traditional Japanese painting styles and techniques with Western European realism. Originally trained in the Kanō school and an active painter for the Tokugawa Shogunate, Masaaki later taught at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. This image depicts imagery associated with the summer, specifically July, as morning glories bloom for a short period during the month.

Physical Description:

A lark stands inside the curving vine of a morning glory growing on the grass. Both the bird and the flowers are naturalistically depicted, while the grass is indicated with subtle brushstrokes mostly grouped in the bottom left corner of the painting.
