Le Fumeur (First Plate)
Édouard Manet
Description
Subject Matter:
The print reproduces, in reverse, Manet's 1866 painting of the same name, now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art (http://collections.artsmia.org/art/1689/the-smoker-edouard-manet). Manet also made a second print based on this image, using pure etching without any drypoint. It has been suggested that the "smoker" was Manet's neighbor, Joseph Gall.
Physical Description:
A bust-length image of an old man with a full beard smoking a pipe. He holds the pipe with his right hand, and glances to his left. He wears a black short hat and a lighter-colored button-up coat or smock. The background is left blank.
