Subject Matter:
Jean Le Moal was influenced early on by works of Cubist and Fauvist artists, whose interest in large fields of bright, flat colors can be seen in this work. By the time this lithograph was created in the 1950s, Le Moal had become interested in using a more lyrical form of painting and drawing. In La Poisson, his desire to find a more absolute representation of things by emphasizing form and spontaneous movement are portrayed through his use of bright color and shapes.
Physical Description:
This color lithograph shows an orange fish encased in a wide halo of blue ink which is, in turn, encased in a border of purple ink, with light grey showing through from behind the purple and blue. On the left is a gridded orange circular shape encased in the same borders.
