Leaf from a Glossed Bible (Pauline Letter with Commentary; Epistle to the Thessalonians)
French
Description
This page, from a glossed copy of the Epistles (letters) of Paul, contains the commentaries of a Paris theologian, Gilbert de la Porrée, in a smaller script, with the words of the epistle being discussed underlined in red. The style of illumination is transitional, marking the development from late Romanesque to early Gothic around the year 1200. At the bottom of the page, the quire mark (xiiii) and catchword (angelis—the first word of the next page) helped binders to assemble the leaves of the book in the correct order. The linen flaps were added by a modern collector to protect the decoration.
