Subject Matter:
Actor Bandō Hikosaburō V was born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1832. He was active from 1842 until his death in 1877. He was known for his skill at playing all roles and was particularly notable for his performances of budōgoto (martial arts), villains, and onnagata (“female form” or “female role”). He was considered to be the best actor in the three cities, Edo, Osaka, and Kyoto.
Physical Description:
This is a print of a man wearing a dark robe. He holds a blue fan across his chest in his right hand bearing white letters that read “hi no de”. The background is red and white plaid. A white bubble behind his head has some calligraphy in it.
